Hanami party

It is a Japanese custom that, when the cherry blossom appears in April, people get together and have a picnic under the trees. This is known as 'Hanami' (flower-viewing). I was very honoured to find that despite the early cherry blossom, the party had been postponed until my arrival! It was a picnic on a grand scale, complete with outdoor cooking of soup on a portable gas stove. During the meal, everyone at the picnic stood up to give a speech.
