The photographs below show firstly a laser illuminated tank of fluid, designed to provide experimental verification of computational fluid dynamics calculations.
On the right, the Engineer, Pramod Kumar, who did the fluid flow experiments and as a part of his Bachelor's course, constructed the steam engine shown below. The pressure chamber of the engine has two safety valves, one to let off excess steam pressure and the other a rubber valve which blows on overheating. There is also a flexible (metal) pipe taking the steam to the piston, its flexibility allowing some control over the steam pressure. The engine is designed to run on dry steam. There is no gearing and at full speed, it gets to hundreds of revolutions per minute.
