Steel Bridge across the Bosporus Strait, Turkey

H. K. D. H. Bhadeshia

Turkey lies both in Europe and in Asia. About 3 percent of the country lies in Thrace, at the eastern edge of southern Europe. To the east, the rest of Turkey covers a large, mountainous peninsula called Anatolia or Asia Minor. Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, lies on both sides of the Bosporus, a narrow body of water between Thrace and Anatolia. The Bosporus strait, which is 19 miles long, connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara.

The suspension bridge across the Bosporus was completed in 1973. Photographs by Maya Bhadeshia.
