Udo Welzel, who with Eric Mittemeijer, hosted my visit. Here we are in one of the X-ray rooms with powder diffraction facilities.
X-ray facility uses a crystal to monochromatise the beam.
The sample stage in another X-ray machine.
The device with the lines has a set of capillaries, through which X-rays are totally internally refracted, leading to a highly parallel beam.
The "MM996" device is a multilayered tungsten-carbon artificial crystal, which focuses the rays, leading to a huge increase in intensity, almost comparable to a synchrotron. The crystal is mounted on a rotating anode X-ray set.

This is the heating stage.

Cornelis Bos, showing me his exciting work on interface mobility.
The variety of gases used in the carbo-nitriding equipment.
Nitriding furnace, typically operating at about 500-600 centigrade.
The sample after nitriding falls into the flask which contains a quenching medium.

Santosh, Andreas Leineweber and Thomas, at the new carbo-nitriding equipment they have constructed.
