The chain is strong enough to support a magnet which is being pulled in the opposite direction by gravity. The two forces are not yet united in the human perception. They don't know it though.

The Experiment

Mathew conducted an unintentional experiment to determine the material from which the large gear is made. The bicycle was dropped such that the gear hit the concrete stairs. The picture on the left shows the gear intact and that on the right shows how a chunk of concrete was dislodged from the stairs. Clearly not aluminium.
