Pennsylvania State University and American Welding Society (Chicago)

The major campus of Pennsylvania State University is located in State College, Philidelphia. The Materials Science and associated Departments are extremely active in research and teaching. I was hosted there by Professor Tarashankar DebRoy. We then drove to Chicago, some 560 miles away, to get to the meeting of the American Welding Society.

Paul and Wendy's mineral collections. Spherulites of cristobalite crystallising from glassy rock. The mineral is called Obsidian - rapidly solidified magma containing about 70% silica, crystallising to cristobalite, Notice Avrami type impingement between the spherulites.
