The first tin can for preserving food, produced in England, by Bryan Donkin and Co., London |
Top of two-piece tin-can for food (steel coated with a thin layer of corrosion-resistant electroplated tin.) |
The top part is coated with a material on the side that faces inwards, in order to form a hermetic seal after mechanical sealing. |
The container is curled at its edges, to mate with the equivalent part on the top-piece. |
These corrugations strengthen the tin which has to sustain pressures that develop when the hot food is inserted into the tin. |
Corresponding corrugations on the bottom of the can. |
