Rian Dippenaar did his Ph.D. in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, in 1968, under the supervision of Professor Robert Honeycombe. They together solved the mechanism by which the two components of pearlite nucleate [Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, A 333 (1973) 455-467]. Antoinette was also in our Department and worked with Jeff Chadwick for the illustration of his book "Metallography of phase transformations", published 1972. Rian is now a Professor at Wollongong University, which Harry has visited twice.
