Rail moving points

H. K. D. H. Bhadeshia

The French high-speed rail authorities have mandated that moving points must be made from the carbide-free bainitic steel. Here I took some pictures at the Cambridge rail station to use in a book that I am writing, to explain how these points work.

I asked a guard and he explained that the pistons controlling the points are driven by signals from the control room. IN the old days, the points would be moved manually by levers installed in the vicinity.

The purpose of course, is to allow trains to change to an adjacent eventually parallel track.

On the way to the Department in Cambridge, beautiful day. The trees have now grown nicely since they were first planted during the construction of our building.
