During the year 2003, Janine Bourriau arranged for James P. Allen, who at the time was the curator of Egyptian art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, to write these elegant Egyptian hieroglyphs for Harry.

They mean literally, "learning about things" in the material sense as opposed to "things" in the abstract. Effectively a definition of science, or as Janine says, [Harry's] bit of it.
