Construction of Shanghai Grand Opera House, and Shanghai North Bund Super-tower

Visited two construction sites. The Opera house has a stair case that looks like a Chinese fan, and required considerable effort to avoid resonance when people walk. In addition to the composite action of the steel reinforcement and concrete, there are six tuned-dampers that eliminate resonance when people walk with a step frequency that is typicallly 1.5-2 Hz. The super tower has some incredible engineering to avoid seismic damage and flexure.

Prior to these visits, Harry was educated by the people who designed the structures (Tongji University).
