Steel is a technologically advanced material in a competitive environment. The proper design, manufacture and fabrication of steels is now a quantitative science which is sufficiently advanced to be applied routinely and with confidence. This intensive course will combine lectures from leading experts with practical demonstrations, and will cover thoroughly all aspects of steel microstructure modelling.
Major advances in the physical metallurgy of steels have, over the last decade, enabled the quantitative modelling of their microstructure and mechanical properties. Thus, it is possible to routinely calculate phase diagrams for multicomponent systems and, more importantly, to calculate the transformation kinetics and hence the development of microstructure during processing. Notable examples include the modelling of the welding process, and the thermomechanical processing of wrought steels. The methods involved rely on a deep understanding of the mechanisms of phase transformation, to a level which is not taught in undergraduate courses.
The course structure is designed to refresh some basic concepts essential in any quantitative approach, followed by details of transformation mechanisms, mechanical properties, the methodology of modelling and aspects of software design. Delegates will receive instruction on the web-based Materials Algorithms Project Library, which consists of a perpetual FORTRAN library of complete programs and elementary subroutines.
The programme has been designed for materials scientists, metallurgists and engineers whose work involves the technology, design, fabrication or processing of steels. The programme is appropriate for technologists who are new to the field as well as for senior professionals wishing to update their understanding of this important area. With materials selected from the leading edge of research, this programme is equally valuable to practitioners from industry and academia.
Delegates will also receive three key texts:
Other relevant books will be available to order at a discount cost prior to the course. An order form will be sent on registration.

Course Fees : 695.00
The course fee, payable in advance, includes full course notes and a certificate of attendance, together with lunch and daytime refreshments for the duration of the course. In order to benefit fully from the course, we strongly recommend that course delegates elect to be residential, as courses are designed to allow planned and informal discussion in the evening.
Discounts may be available for multiple bookings received at the same time. An academic discount may also be available. Please contact the Course Administrator for further details.
Accommodation
: 185.00
(3 nights dinner, bed and breakfast)
Accommodation can be arranged for delegates in college rooms with shared facilities at Corpus Christi College. The fee includes bed and breakfast and dinner (with wine) for three nights, and a course dinner. If you would prefer to make your own arrangements, please indicate this on the registration form; details of local hotels will be sent to you.
