The period between 29th April and 5th May contains three public holidays, and is known as Golden Week. Associate Professor Sadahiro Tsurekawa and his wife very kindly invited me to lunch at their house on one of the holidays.
It is traditional to hang kites in the shape of koi carp (koinobori) outside houses for Children's Day (5th May) - see the picture below.
