1971, laboratory book costing 17 and a half pence. On the 14th of February 1971, the U.K. adopted the decimal form of currency, whereas this book begins in October 1971, hence the decimal currency. (In the old currency, it would not be normal to refer to more than 12 pence, since 12 pence made a shilling)
