The "highly commended" video shown below is by Apparao Chintha of the University of Cambridge. The sample is a special steel designed to be extremely strong and tough. The damage that is revealed is due to the steel being subjected to impact and abrasion by granite, in an impact-tumbler test. The impacts are normal to the plane of observation. It is obtained using a scanning electron microscope which has a gallium ion-beam, so after each observation of the impact surface, 50 nm are machined off and a new observation surface generated.
