The Sheffield Society of Engineers and Metallurgists was founded in 1894, later named the "Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association (SMEA)", a lively community of those involved with the development and technology of steels. It is, of course, based in Sheffield, the city where the industrial revolution was sparked by the creation and exploitation of the mass production of the material.
Each year, SMEA holds a celebrity lecture, on this occasion given on the 9th of July by Harry Bhadeshia. The presentation is available, a video will eventually be added to our channel.

![]() Rather nice building with curvature and a variety of interesting design features. |
![]() The theatre before the arrival of the audience. |
![]() This is the lovely (Geoffrey) Greenwood family who came over especially for Harry's talk |
![]() Attendees usually gather here before the event. A great place to meet. This is where Kathryn Jackson and Harry Bhadeshia initiated an idea for a book, witnessed by Andy Howe who promised to oversee the project. |
![]() Now the lecture-theatre occupied. |
![]() There are many here who made huge contributions to the development of steel and associated processes. |
![]() Also, family members and those just embarking into their metallurgical careers. |

![]() Really quite nice design. |
![]() .... and curvature - wonder how the beam is fashioned into this shape? |
![]() Green to walk across. |
![]() The famous Sheffield Hallam University, where Brian Pickering was a Professor during its days as the Sheffield Hallam Polytechnic. |
![]() It was founded in 1843 as the Sheffield School of Design, originally catering for just 32 students. During the first World War, it was requisitioned to help some 64,555 wounded men. |
