An "Asharm" is a place for spiritual enlightenment. This particular Ashram was established by Mahatma Gandhi on his return from South Africa. It is the place from which he led the famous salt-march as a protest against the salt-tax imposed by the British rulers of India. The British had prevented Indians from producing or selling salt. On reaching the Arabian Sea coast, Gandhi and many others symbolically broke the law by picking up handfuls of salt at the shore.
