Hydrogen transmission in steel pipe

Tata Steel and Welspun Corporation (large-diameter pipe manufacturer) in India have developed a variant of X65 pipe steel that is said to be capable of transmitting pure hydrogen while maintaining critical properties. The resistance-welded steel pipe has been shown to retain a fracture toughness greater than 85 MPa √m when subjected to hydrogen gas at 10 MPa pressure for 1000 h.

The photographs below are from the Tata Steel Product Technology team, with Subhankar Das Bakshi (PT Group member) responsible for the chemical composition of the steel, rolling parameters and the desired microstructure.
