Norfolk Broads, 75 mile bike ride by Avinash and Harry

An epic bike ride through the beautiful countryside a little north of Norwich. Started off from Comberton at 0620, left Cambridge together at 0645 with bicycles mounted at the back of Harry's car. On reaching the starting point, began cycling at 0830. The temperature was fine at the beginning but got really hot towards the end.

The cycling pack sent by Tour de Broads

Trained with two separate 40 mile rides before the main event, between Comberton and St Ives.

The tradition during training is to stop at St Ives for a large hot-chocolate made with oat milk

There were four feeding stations along the route, this is the first one

Another feeding station, this time for lunch

No one cared to lock bikes even though we spent time inside the building

Not completely sure where we are, but nice

Harry's bike had mechanical trouble, so we fixed it literally with string used to tie the bike numbers.

Avinash

Avinash is a more accomplished cyclist, and I am certain he made allowances for me.

This was the final feeding stop, free crisps, flapjacks and drinks

At the finish, after 76.7 miles. Harry had a chance encounter there, with Becky Stamford from the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department -- her husband had covered 100 miles!

Packing up the bikes for the journey home. Notice the additional number plate. Here, Avinash sacrificed one of his socks to prevent the bikes from touching each other. So in the car, he had just one sock. p.s. we are wearing our spinning medals

Map of the nominally 75 mile ride and some statistics - note the climb, which was worst towards the end, so much so that I had to use gears that I have not used before. According to Wikipedia, over an 8 hour work shift, an average, healthy, well-fed and motivated manual labourer may sustain an output of around 75 watts of power.

Speed (km per hour) and heart rate. It was baking hot during the 75 mile car journey home, and we had forgotten to take drinks. So when we reached Cambridge, the local Liberal Democrats Councillor Sunita Hansraj kindly gave us refreshing juice and packed food for us to take to our homes. How about that!
