Cementite dissolution in hypereutectoid steels containing chromium is analyzed with dilatometric analysis combined with a consideration of the carbon content in austenite. Analysis suggests that the austenite transformed from a mixture of ferrite and cementite is likely to have a carbon concentration corresponding to local equilibrium with ferrite. The overall dissolution behaviour of cementite is better described with the suggested analysis procedure.
