The Darwin College and Cambridge University Community around Calcutta

I met the following people during my visit. I did meet a very large number of people, made a huge number of new friends and I apologise if I have left anyone out inadvertently.

• Sourabh Chatterjee (current Ph.D. student at Darwin College, Cambridge). I met him in Calcutta.
• Saurabh Kundu (current Ph.D. student at Darwin College, Cambridge). I met him at Tata Steel in Jamshedpur and met his wife Itti and son Rishiraj at their house in Jamshedpur.
• Dr Debashish Bhattacharjee (did his Ph.D. at Churchill College, Cambridge), now Director of Research at Tata Steel, Jamshedpur. I also met his family, all of whom have strong associations with Cambridge. During his stay in Cambridge, Debashish made frequent use of Darwin College facilities.
• Sourav, currently a Ph.D. student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, who will shortly be coming to Cambridge for one year under a scholarship where a part of his work can be done in Cambridge.
• Professor Shiv Brat Singh, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, who did his Ph.D. in Darwin College, Cambridge University. We travelled from Kharagpur to Calcutta and had a lovely meal at his parents house where I also met his sister, brother-in-law and young Vishal, together with two young lads who simply wanted to meet a Cambridge Professor.
• Sohini Banerjee, who did her law degree in Cambridge, now is a lecturer in law, and the founding Secretary of the Darwin College India Society based in Calcutta.
• Professor Partha Chattopadhyay, Bengal Engineering and Science University, who spent six months in Cambridge and had frequent meals in Darwin. He initiated the now highly successful Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms activity at the BESU. I also met his family.
• Professor Marimuth Murugananth, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, who did his Ph.D. at Queen's College, Cambridge. Knowing him allowed Harry to use the squash courts in Queen's for three years, as his guest.
• Professor Datta, Bengal Engineering and Science University, who contributed to the special issue of ISIJ International on Neural Networks, organised in 1991 by Harry and Professor Hidetoshi Fujii of Osaka University (formerly visiting member of Darwin College).
• Subhankar Das Bhakshi, an employee of Tata Steel, who will soon be coming to Cambridge to do a Master's Degree in Materials Science.
