Abstract

The relationship between solute content, microstructure and properties has been clarified for high-strength steel weld metals with 7-9 wt% nickel. Mathematical modelling suggested that at high nickel concentrations, the manganese level must be kept low to achieve good toughness. In combination with other theory and detailed characterisation, it has been possible to achieve both strength and toughness. At the same time, the existence of coalesced bainite is demonstrated.
