The Golden Gate Bridge, made of steel, was completed in 1937 and stands 68 m over the waters of San Francisco Bay. The distance between the suspension towers is 129o m, a record in its time but now beaten by the 2.2 km span of the Asashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. The Golden Gate Bridge is painted in 'International Orange' for visibility in fog.
The Bay Bridge is also made of steel.
