Harry in India, 3-10th of March 2007

Dr Debashish Bhattacharjee, Head of Research and Development at Tata Steel, hosted Harry and others for a memorable visit to India. The visit included the following events:

• Brainstorming session on steels research, held at Tata Steel laboratories in Jamshedpur.
• Tour of Tata Steel Metallurgical Laboratories.
• Tour of Tata Steel Coatings Laboratories.
• A two-day International Conference on Fracture, Fatigue and Structural Integrity, Jamshedpur. Harry gave a plenary lecture on mitigation of residual stresses.
• Tour of Control and Automation Laboratories at Tata Steel, Jamshedpur.
• Dinner hosted by the Vice-President of Tata Steel, Dr Mukerjee.
• A talk on the Role of Materials to some 1000 16-18 year old science students, by Claire Davis, Eric Palmiere and Harry Bhadeshia at the Inter College in Jamshedpur, on behalf of the Indian Association of British Scholars, organised by Dr Samita Bhattacharjee.
• Lunch hosted by the Bhattacharjee's at their residence before departing for Calcutta.
• Microalloying 2007 conference, Calcutta, organised by Bengal Engineering and Science University and the Indian Institute of Metals, Calcutta. Harry presented a paper on the topology of deformed grains, co-authored with Mike Sellars of Sheffield University.
• Opening ceremony for the Centre of Excellence on Soft Computations in Materials Science, at the Bengal Engineering and Science University. Harry's address to the assembled congregation
• Harry was the external examiner for the Ph.D. Thesis of S. Ghosh at the Bengal Engineering and Science University.

The day was also 'Holi', a "celebration of the triumph of good against evil", in which people throw colour at each other and generally have fun and sing risque songs during dancing.
